Art Series - Post #13 - Oil on Canvas "Girl Blowing Bubbles"

Friday, January 20, 2017

Well, it's been a while since I've posted -- this is my first post of the New Year! Whaaaaat?! I've had an awesome break for Christmas and New Year, spending time with my family and enjoying a nice relaxing break! The past couple of weeks I've begun planning projects and other things for the blog for this year, and have been thinking of goals for myself as well! One of those personal goals is to be selling some of my art as prints by the end of the year, so that means a lot more art creating--which always seems to be a goal for me every year--and, in return, having a lot more art to feature over here on the blog. So, to kick that off, I'd like to share this oil on canvas piece I did, which if you haven't seen the final piece already it just means you aren't following me over on Instagram or Facebook!

This piece is called simply "Girl Blowing Bubbles" and I painted it as a birthday gift for my mother....which she only ended up receiving 8 months after her birthday... time to plan for her birthday gift once again! The reason she received it so late, and I discuss this  briefly in the time-lapse video below, is that oil painting is sort a newer medium for me and there is a bit of a learning curve there! Throughout my art career--school and personal work--my paintings have mostly been in watercolour and a bit of acrylic. For those of you reading who have never experience oils themselves, when painting with oil colours, unlike watercolours or acrylics that dry quickly, you are using a wet on wet technique meaning your paints are always wet. If you find yourself in need of painting over another colour--mostly a dark over a light--this is nearly impossible without creating an incredible mess, and therefore you need to wait about a week for your painting to dry before you can continue. Even the knowledge of how wet on wet works doesn't prepare you for actually doing it, but I am really enjoying the challenge and getting used to this wonderful new medium!

So now, if you'd like to take a look at the painting as it progressed, here's a quick time-lapse for you to enjoy!

As always, I hope you enjoyed this post, and I'm very anxious to do many more oil paintings, and I can't wait to show you all! Also, if any of you are curious, once I do begin selling my art prints I will be making them available for sale online--I'll create an online shop--and I'll be selling prints of works done in many different mediums, not just oil! There'll be something for everyone, I hope!
