Large Scale Printing Using A Standard Home Printer

Friday, July 7, 2017

Have you ever done any sketches, line art, or rough drafts of art that you wanted to display on a much larger scale? But now you have to re-draw it again; that can be a pain in the butt for sure... at least that's how I feel. Well, I have a solution for you in this post! You can actually print your images much larger than you realize with a standard 8.5" x 11" printer! I learned this tile printing method early in my graphic design career in order to create quick mock-ups of posters, banners, or ads which I used to double check everything worked aesthetically, and to present scaled drafts to clients or my boss! In this post I'm going to teach you how to print your images as several tiles to create a large enough template for tracing, or larger reference material to refine as a completed piece!

As you can see, Vada was very eager to help with the photos for this post...

There are really so many applications for this tile printing method besides just printing art templates and references. You could also use it to put together large birthday or special occasion banners for much cheaper than getting a print shop to print them. Or perhaps you'd like to envision how a piece of wall art might look in a room. I'm sure you could think of many more ways this tile printing method can be useful!

Before the video here are a few links you might be interested in:

- My original calligraphy template from the video. If you want to print it and use it as your template to make wall art like mine, you are welcome to do so, but please keep in mind that I give you permission to print and use it for personal use only and you may not edit it in part or in full in any way besides to resize it to fit your application!
- If you're looking for an affordable but great light pad I recommend this one I'm using in the video

And now the video!! Enjoy!

This is where I've hung my hand-written enlarged quote in my house. When someone comes in the front door, this is what they see when they look up the stairs. I'd like to add a bit more to this space in the future, but this is what it look like for now. LOTS of projects on the go!

That's it for this post, friends! Hope you enjoyed it and you'll find many uses for it! Like I suggested in the video, if you find it useful, please SHARE! Something like this is quite specific and therefore harder to search and find!
