DIY Farmhouse Meets Industrial Shelving

Tuesday, October 11, 2016

I've had home decor projects heavily on my mind lately--as you may know, we just moved into our own house--and I'm bringing you one of those project tutorials today - Farmhouse Meets Industrial Shelving! I've seen a few examples of shelving like this over on Pinterest so it isn't completely an original idea--are there really any completely original ideas these days, really? But, anyhow, this is my own version of it, which, I just have to say, is the best version!!

I've installed this shelving in my bathroom--and this is just the beginning of this bathroom makeover, painting and much more to follow--but you can really put them anywhere you need shelving and want this kind of look. You can also do many more than just 2 if you want more storage, and if you want to spend the money on it. The steel pieces cost me $8.39 (CAD) per shelf--just add your appropriate taxes--and the board cost $5.75 for 8' and you can get 20" boards (so 4 shelves) out of that... keep in mind these prices will probably be much less if you're in the U.S. So that's about $9.80 plus tax per shelf, and then you just have to decide how to finish your wood! If you want to treat your shelves to look similar to mine, check out my DIY Barn Board Tutorial post!! You can make anything wood look barn-boardy... farmhousey... rustic.. -y...

Now, this is a pretty simple and straight forward project but I've made a video tutorial to show you how I went about it, and perhaps it will help some of you out there who have little DIY or handy(wo)man experience. First, let's take a look at what I used to accomplish this Farmhouse/Industrial Shelf project. And just a note about supplies: you can adjust the depth of your shelves by purchasing a deeper board and longer steel pipes. I like this depth for over the toilet since it's not protruding out too much from the wall; less banged heads and not in the way for those of you who stand to do some of your toilet business.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED  **To make 2 shelves**

- 2" x 8" x 8' (SPF) Board (Cut 2 x 20" lengths - if you don't have a saw at home, get them to cut it at the hardware store before you purchase it) Follow this BARN BOARD DIY to get the same look. ---> I used
- (4) 3/4" x 8" Black Nipple Pipes (Yes, that is what they are called) ---> I used
- (4) 3/4" Floor Flanges ---> I used
- (4) 3/4" Cap Fittings ---> I used
- (4) 3/4" Galvanized Pipe Straps ---> I used
- Wall Anchors and Screws (at least 8 that will hold a good amount of weight) ---> I used
- Wood Screws (that will fit the flanges and the pipe straps according to the tutorial - 1/2" length, rounded head will do. You'll need 16)
- Drill and Drill Bits
- Pencil
- Level

This was such a fun project and my first in our house. I can't wait to show you guys all of the awesome projects along the way that I've got planned to make this house really our own! Join me again and leave any questions or comments below, in the comments section... or on the video's comment section. See you again very soon!
